Knot Your Mother's Scarf
Surprise! For the second time this month, a neck scarf from my mother's closet is the statement piece of an ensemble (check out the other post here if you missed it).
I really think this trend is here to stay for the fall season, so I've been playing around with different patterns and outfits to try to see what works for me. Also, I want to give you guys some varying inspiration if you're looking to incorporate neck scarves into your own wardrobe. Today's version is a preppy look, incorporating a color palette that's perfect for the upcoming fall season.
I saw this black scarf with the tan flower pattern in my mom's pile, and I knew I had to have it. The neutrality of the combination will allow for multiple uses, which I'm excited to play around with in the future, but also fit in perfectly with today's ensemble.
When I was packing for my Boston trip, I tried to pick outfits that were appropriate for the activities of each day. On this day in particular, we were visiting Harvard and MIT, so I wanted to stay on the preppy side to feel like I could fit in with all the students and staff, while still keeping the look fashionable.
In my opinion, both the denim button down shirt and the button up skirt enmesh everything I was hoping for: versatility, preppy-ness, and comfort, while keeping a slight grunge feel helps make it a little more fashion forward. I also love the contrast of textures between denim and corduroy.
Still, with just a shirt and a skirt, the outfit felt a little flat, missing a lot of the dimension that I wanted. So, to counteract that, I brought out my trusty, tan gladiator sandals. They were well worth the purchase because I swear they go with everything, and they seem much more upscale than a plain pair of slip ons, without losing any comfort. The tan in the neck scarf perfectly tied in the tan of the sandals, and the glasses polished off the look by bringing in a little extra prep. Of course, I also carried around my brown purse to keep the outfit completely cohesive.
Overall, I achieved my ideal look for visiting an Ivy League. It was classic, preppy, and modest, but still showed off my love of clothing and sense of style. No matter what outfit you choose, always make sure it represents you. Any trend can be tweaked to fit your personal look, which is the best part about fashion!
For those of you who love the neck scarf look books, have no fear, they're knot coming to an end yet! In a couple of weeks, I will be showing yet another outfit idea on how to style this fantastic piece, so stay tuned!
hope this inspires you to raid your mom's closet soon - it just might be full of gems
